Sorbitol intolerance Test

What is it?

Sorbitol is a sugar found naturally in red algae, leaves, and some fruits such as pears, apples, plums, quinces, peaches, or apricots. Additionally, it is used as an additive (E-420) in many prepared foods (industrial pastries, candies, chewing gum, etc.) and as an excipient in some medications and toothpaste.

Sorbitol intolerance affects approximately 40-60% of the population and is caused by a problem in the ability of the intestinal mucosa to absorb sorbitol, leading to intact delivery to the large intestine, where it undergoes fermentation by the microbiota.

The breath test for detecting sorbitol intolerance is the most sensitive breath test on the market. It is a test of exhaled hydrogen and/or methane (or breath test) for the rapid detection of this food intolerance in the body.

The test involves orally administering a controlled amount of sorbitol and collecting exhaled air at different times (every 30 minutes) to determine the amount of hydrogen and/or methane exhaled through the breath.

Symptoms

Symptoms related to malabsorption or intolerance to sorbitol typically begin between 30 minutes and 2 hours after consuming a product containing sorbitol. Among the most common are:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Gas
• Abdominal pain and bloating

Who is it indicated for?

The breath test for diagnosing sorbitol intolerance is particularly recommended for individuals with clinical suspicion of this intolerance due to their symptoms after consuming a food containing sorbitol.

What does the kit include?

1. 8 tubes for samples of exhaled air obtained through breath. Each one labeled with the corresponding blow time.
2. Straw for blowing into the tubes.
3. One envelope with sorbitol preparation.
4. Form to be filled out with your information and the symptoms you may experience during the test.

Patient information:

• It is essential to carefully read the “Preparatory Instructions” and the “Sample Collection Instructions” before conducting the test.
• The test must be conducted after fasting for 12-14 hours.
• The duration of the test is approximately 2-3 hours (175 minutes).
