Description

What is it?

Fructose malabsorption or intolerance is a gastrointestinal disorder in which the absorption of fructose is diminished due to a deficiency of transporters for this sugar in the enterocytes, located in the small intestine. It can be due to intestinal dysbiosis, excessive consumption of ultra-processed foods, the presence of pre-existing digestive disorders, and much more.

This is an extremely common condition and, although it is not well-known among the general population, it can affect up to 1 in 3 people.

The breath test for detecting fructose intolerance is the most sensitive breath test on the market. It is a hydrogen and/or methane breath test (or breath test) for the rapid detection in the body of this food intolerance.

The test involves orally administering a controlled amount of fructose and collecting exhaled air at different times (every 30 minutes) to determine the amount of hydrogen and/or methane exhaled through breath.

Symptoms

Symptoms related to malabsorption or intolerance to fructose can vary. Among the most common are the following:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Chronic fatigue

Who is it indicated for?

The breath test for diagnosing fructose intolerance is especially indicated for individuals with clinical suspicion of this intolerance due to their symptoms after consuming a food containing fructose (present especially in many fruits, vegetables, honey, etc.).

What does the kit include?

  1. 8 tubes for exhaled air samples obtained through breath. Each one labeled with the corresponding blowing time.
  2. Straw for blowing into the tubes.
  3. One envelope with the fructose preparation.
  4. Form to be completed with your data and the symptoms you may experience during the test.

Patient information:

  • It is essential to carefully read the “Pre-test Instructions” and the “Sample Collection Instructions” before conducting the test.
  • The test must be done after fasting for 12-14 hours.
  • The duration of the test is approximately 2-3 hours (175 minutes).
