Lactose intolerance Test

What is it?

Lactose is a type of sugar found in milk and other dairy products of animal origin. The enzyme responsible for degrading it is lactase, produced in the small intestine of all lactating mammals. Generally, lactose intolerance is due to decreased lactase production.

Lactose intolerance affects approximately 70% of the world’s population. It is a very common component in animal-origin milk, cheeses, yogurts, ice creams, shakes, and more.

The breath test for lactose intolerance detection is the most sensitive exhaled air test on the market. It is a hydrogen and/or methane breath test for the rapid detection of this food intolerance in the body.

The test involves orally administering a controlled amount of lactose and collecting exhaled air at different times (every 30 minutes) to determine the amount of hydrogen and/or methane exhaled through breath.

Symptoms

Symptoms related to malabsorption or lactose intolerance typically begin between 30 minutes and 2 hours after consuming the dairy product in question. Among the most common are:

• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Gas
• Stomach cramps
• Stomach rumbling

Who is it indicated for?

The breath test for lactose intolerance diagnosis is especially indicated for individuals with clinical suspicion of this intolerance due to their symptoms after consuming a lactose-containing food.

What does the kit include?

1. 8 tubes for samples of exhaled air obtained through breath. Each one labeled with the corresponding blowing time.
2. Straw for blowing into the tubes.
3. Envelope with lactose preparation.
4. Form to be completed with your data and the symptoms you may experience during the test.

Patient information

• It is essential to carefully read the “Precautions” and “Sample Collection Instructions” before performing the test.
• The test should be conducted after fasting for 12-14 hours.
• The test duration is approximately 2-3 hours (175 minutes).

What does the report include?

1. The analyzed parameters and whether alterations have been detected in any of them (positive/negative).

The study results are presented as positive or negative for lactose intolerance and are displayed with a dynamic curve that should be interpreted by a specialist familiar with your medical history, especially if any of the results are positive.
